Painted under the pilots window is, "Bill Fey's Hot Squat." Under the Nav's window is painted, "Don."
Eighteen crews were assigned to VPB-111 which made up its authorized crew strength as of 31 December 1944. The official "War Diary" reports as of 31 December 1944 show 15 aircraft authorized and 15 assigned. For this reason, more than one crew had its picture taken in front of an aircraft that might not have been its assigned aircraft. Arcft. #3889! 7 was destroyed in an air raid on 26 Dec 1944 and was replaced with #38834. I could not find (in the "War Diary") when arcft. #38853 was assigned to the squadron yet it was crewed by CAC #16. These crew photos were most likely taken after #38384 arrived on the last day of December as can be seen by the photo of CAC #14 which is standing next to 834. The Squadron left Tinian around the 12th of Januany 1945
