On 15 April 1945, Lt Frank Cutaiar and his crew returned to Palawan with a very battle damaged aircraft, BuNo 38906. Lt. Cutaiar attacked a 6,000 ton "Tare Baker" in the Sinapore Starits. He met intense and accurate anti-aircraft fire of all calibers from the enemy vessel, damaging his #3 engine, hydraulic system and one rudder. At that time, Lt Cutaiar was 1030 miles from base with only 1,700 gals. of fuel. Lt Cutaiar showed superb skill and brought his plane home. On landing, due to the absence of brakes, the plane could not be stopped and taxied into two P-38's at the end of the runway. All three aircraft were badly damaged. Although the aircraft crashed on landing, all hands on board walked away without a scratch.

On 16 June 1945, this aircraft and its new crew (replacement crew #13) did not return from a routine patrol and was presumed lost. Crewmembers were: Lt(gj) L.T. Bass; Lt(jg) W.I. Derngerger; Ens P.C. Stretcher; ARM3c A.P. Anders; ARM1c R.H. Graham; ARM3c R.P. Kivitt; ARM3c R.W. Mitchell; AMM3c H.V. Philpott; AOM3c G.W. Pringle; ARM3c J.Regiac; and ARM3c W.A. Whitener. Lt(jg) Bass and crew reported! missing in the Makassar Straits which are located between Borneo and Cebels. The Straits and approximately 400 miles long by 60 to 160 miles wide. On 17 June 1945, three special search patrols were launched to search for Lt(jg) Bass and his crew with negative results.
