November 1944. A view of Waikiki Beach, Diamond Head, and the Ala Moana and Royal Hawaiian Hotels. The Ala Moana is the hotel closest to Diamond Head and the Royal Hawaiian is in the foreground of the picture. The Royal Hawaiian, the picture with the beach unbrellas in the foreground, was a pink building that the Navy rented and used as a rest facility for Navy crews. The Ala Moana, the picture with the deserted Waikiki Beach, was used by the Army for soldiers that were in town on pass. The building to the right of the Ala Moana, with the black peaked roof was a favorite watering hole. The VPB-111 aircrews that were returning from Palawan towards the end of the war, wrote to the fellows back on Palawan that the Royal Hawaiian was a must place to stay on their way back to the States. Many a VPB-111 aircrew did just that.
