January 15, 1945 to February 6, 1945. Morotai, Dutch East Indies. The island of Morotai is located in the Dutch East Indies and lies 2deg 19min North lat. by 128deg 25min East long. On 15 Jan. 45, VPB-111 began moving from West Field, Tinian to Morotai via Peleliu in the Palau Islands.
This movement was to relieve VPB-101 on Morotai. Four (4) aircraft were detatched to Tacloban, Leyte, P.I. via Peleliu and by 17 January, all aircraft were in place to begin combat patrols at both Morotai and Tacolban.
While at Morotai, crews flew out of Wama Airfield (Guama, Morotai), which was built by the Americans after the completion of Pitue Airfield (Pitoe, Morotai). Pitue was used by fighters based on Morotai.
I wonder if any of the Squadron crews remember the strong winds encountered on Morotai? With interconnecting taxiways at the Air Base, fighters would use Wama when taking off with full fuel loads. The Squadron departed Morotai on 6 Feb 45 to join up with the detatched planes at Tacloban, Leyte.
